Using DX objects as folder shortcuts on the desktop

I have some folder shortcuts on my desktop and have it replaced by some DX objects and setting their targets. Everything is fine.
Now if I browse my desktop from within an application (Word for example) I can't see these DX objects. (when using regular shortcuts, I can "see" them).
Do I forget to set something or is it the "right" behaviour ? - if this is the case, I cannot see any advantage to use objects instead of regular shortcuts - except the fun.
